Proton aims to have a hybrid car on the market by 2012.
The national car maker will roll out its first fleet of hybrid electric vehicles in January for a test run before mass production begins in 2012.
Officials have revealed Proton began testing prototypes two months ago in Malaysia and in Britain.
The hybrid car is being developed with Proton's British technology partner Fraser-Nash Research Ltd and South Korea’s LG.
It will have a 400 cc gasoline engine that powers a generator and recharges the electric battery when it is depleted.
